Character Name: Christian Francis Stark
Age: 47
How long They've Been in the Deck: Deckborn
Suit/Rank: 10 of Spades
History: There's been a Stark in the upper tier of the Spades - and only in the Spades - for as long as anyone can remember. They've weathered centuries of changes in the Suit and have remained fairly stagnant, stuck in ways that the new generation of Spades might not necessarily approve of. They're certainly not the only Deck family that are hostile towards Outsiders, but when Stark Faces in the past have attempted to purge the Spades of Outsiders completely, you have to concede that the Starks are quite prominent as symbols of anti-Outsider sentiments and Deck bloodline purity.
Christian was the oldest of three, but he has lost both siblings; his younger sister has since died some years after she was wed to the Valerians, and he killed the younger brother some 25 years ago, the night he was to defect from the Spades and join the Clubs.
During his younger days, in a rather literally cut-throat environment where angels feared to tread, Christian flourished. He was a fast learner, he was fearless and became very adept with daggers and fists - much more so than books, at the beginning. It'd been far more efficient to challenge at melee range than regurgitate the classics, though he did manage to catch up with the intellectual pursuits in his late 20s when David took over the Spades.
The Starks are known for not keeping their ranks for long, and Christian was no different. The family name more or less ensured his entry into the Spades as a Four when he was 15, he challenged straight to Six before he was 16 and by 20 he was one of the youngest and most promising Ten of Spades. Every challenge had been issued against an Outsider and every challenge had resulted in an Outsider's corpse being dragged off the floor.
Of course, killing people outside of challenges was regarded as rather ill form, so to speak, so like every Stark that came before him, Christian started losing challenges issued to him by Deckborn Spades that he appeared to be weaker in, namely of the non-combat sort. Within one year he had been challenged three times and dropped to Seven. The following year he dropped to Five.
Five more Outsiders were dead to compensate for lost ranks, and by the time David came into the Spades, Christian was a Ten again. David proved to be a bit of a problem; there was no doubt he was doing some good for the Spades despite his origins, but his presence stunted Christian's career as an executioner culling the Outsider population. It was easy enough to continue throwing challenges and getting Medea to approve him of slowly purging the Spades' upper ranks of Outsiders, but Medea wouldn't be Queen forever.
When Athena took over, Christian stagnated at Eight for three years. Both Faces clearly took issue with his God-given purpose, and he couldn't issue challenges that resulted in death. During this time he successfully defended his rank 11 times, more or less proving that he'd been intentionally losing challenges to have a sanctioned excuse for killing his way back up again.
He got married some twelve years ago, a year into being stuck at Eight, and for a time he appeared busy with new priorities in life, like raising another Stark boy who's going to keep the family tradition going.
When he challenged for Nine, and then a year later for Ten, he sent both of them Outside the Deck for immediate medical treatment. Neither came back. It was a compromise that the Faces didn't necessarily like, but they couldn't exactly stop him from challenging in what were supposed to be non-fatal challenges.
He remained a Ten for the rest of David's reign. He had enough of a reputation that Outsiders were challenging him, either for his position or to get rid of him, so it hadn't been absolutely necessary to play the number game.
After David's mysterious disappearance, Christian dropped to Nine and challenged back up to Ten once more. It would be his final rank change. He has better things to worry about now, after all; his 12 year old son will be a man in three years, and there are plenty of Outsiders in the lower ranks that the young Stark can take care of.
Personality: Christian is what you'd expect of a more traditional, conservative Deckborn Spade. When he doesn't have to be polite, he tends to be arrogant, condescending, cold and generally unpleasant to spend any length of time around. He is a different man among friends, no doubt, but he has few friends - certainly none of the variety that have just wafted into the Deck from God knows where.
He's not that young and ambitious Stark anymore but he still has an admirable unwavering sense of determination. He believes in what he is doing, and that what he is doing is the best thing he could do for the Spades. It's why he has never challenged for Jack or King - he has to stay a Number if he wants to challenge and be challenged, to prove that the only Spades worth anything at all are the Spades that have been here all along.
Appearance: What few scars he bears are decades old and faded - nothing that can be seen outside of a three-piece suit. He's taller than average, about 1.9m (6'3"), but it's certainly not noticeable among the Spades. Not much about him is, really - he seems, for the most part, deceptively average.
